Romans 15:1-33 and 16:25-27

Paul continues from chapter 14 to teach how all holy-people ought to behave during the everyday living of life.

Romans 15:1-6:

15:1But we, the able-people, owe-it to lift-up the weaknesses of the not-able-people, and not to please ourselves; .2each-person of us must please the neighbor into the good-thing towards edification; .3for also Christ did not please himself but according as it was written2, "The reproaches of the (people) reproaching You fell on me"; .4for as-many-things-as were written-beforehand were written into our teaching, in order that by means of the patient-endurance and by means of the encouragement of the writings we may have the hope -
.5but may the God of the patient-endurance and of the encouragement give to you the same-thing to think among one-another according to Christ Jesus .6in order that you may glorify the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ like-mindedly in one mouth.

Emphatically we (in Greek there is a definite word for “we” plus the verb meaning “we owe it” giving emphasis – we ourselves)...

...owe it (we are indebted, obligated, obliged)...

...each one of us (individually, particularly, single, distinctly - each one is responsible for his/her own behavior - each person) must please (be agreeable, acceptable and gratifying to/with)...

...for also Christ did not please himself (while he was carrying-out God's will for accomplishing salvation and redemption), but contrary to pleasing himself...

...in truth, as many things as were previously written (which were prophesied and recorded in the old covenant writings) were written...

...we may have the hope  (the expectation of what God says will definitely come to pass at a future time to when it was first revealed).

Paul is explaining that God has already revealed a lot of information for all holy-people (Christians) to learn about Himself and about the Lord Jesus Christ and how to live our lives - which is why Paul quotes or references so many old covenant scriptures in this letter.

Some of those things have already happened, but some of them are still future to us today. It is because of what has been written that we can learn from this teaching (instruction) and know about the promised blessings that God has already made available to us today, and about those that He will make available to us in the future by means of our Lord Jesus Christ.

Paul continues in verse 5 writing his prayerful wish or desire regarding the holy-people living in Rome at that time:

As well as being able to learn from the previously-revealed written scriptures, it is also available for God to continue to reveal information to holy-people via the gift of holy spirit within each one of us (the spirit of Christ, the hope of the glory; refer to Colossians 1:27) - so that we can learn more about Him and the Lord Jesus Christ and how to live our lives.

God and the Lord Jesus Christ can also communicate information via angels, or via one holy-person to another, or via whatever means they may prefer at specific times. We are to believe what God says, and therefore we are to think among one-another that-which is in accordance with God's son, the Lord Jesus Christ - everything that he is to/for/in us, and whatever may be revealed to us regarding any specific situation.

This clearly indicates that God does-not and will-not force or control any of His children to say or do what He says. Also, being like-minded is not referring to thinking the same about what color of paint to put on the walls or which carpet to put on the floor or what food to prepare for supper! We can think the same-thing among one-another according to Christ Jesus in order that we may glorify the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ like-mindedly in one mouth.

The Greek texts vary as to where the verses known as Romans 16:25-27 were written by Paul in this letter. According to papyrus P46 they should be placed immediately after Romans 15:33 as follows:

Romans 16:25-27:
16:25But to the (One) being able to set you fast - according to my good-message, even the heralded-proclamation of Jesus Christ according to revelation of (the) mystery having been kept-silent2 for agelong times, .26but now having been manifested by means of prophetic writings according to (the) command of the eternal God with-a-view-to obedience of belief having been made-known into all the Gentiles - .27to (the) only wise God, by means of Jesus Christ, to Whom (is) the glory into the ages, with-certainty.

Paul concludes this section of his letter by giving the praise and glory to God for all that He has accomplished by means of His son, the Lord Jesus Christ.

[Note: verbs with a superscript 2 (2) immediately following them indicate the "perfect" tense - details are provided in the "Relevant Notes" link of this study.]
