Revelation 3:1-22
Chapter 3 continues from chapter 2 with the fifth prophetic writing to/for the angels and their different churches. Even though many of the details may relate to a past event, or a present event - these will also relate to a future event. This allows us to understand the methods, characteristics, attitudes, manners of actions, etc, of those who will be participating in the future events.
Several of the events prophesied have already occurred, and the judgments prophesied to/for the angels and their churches by the Lord Jesus Christ have been implemented - but the final judgment and implementation is still future to us today, as recorded in Revelation chapters 19-21.
Revelation 3:1-6:
"3:1To the angel of the church in Sardis you must write:
'The (one) having the seven spirits of God and the seven stars, says the-things-here -
I knew2 your works, that you have a name that you live and you are dead. .2You must become wakefully-watching and you must set-fast the remaining-things which used-to be about to die, for I did not find2 your works having been filled2 before my God. .3Therefore you must remember how you received2 and heard, and you must keep and you must repent. Therefore if-ever you may not wakefully-watch I will have-come as a thief and you may never know what-kind-of hour I will have-come on you. .4But you have little names in Sardis which did not soil their outer-garments and they will walk with me in white (outer-garments) because they are worthy.
.5The (person) being-victorious thus will clothe-himself in white outer-garments, and I will never wipe-out his name from the book of the life, and I will express-agreement (regarding) his name before my Father and before His angels.
.6The (person) having an ear must hear what the spirit says to the churches.'
John continues writing the words from the Lord Jesus Christ...
- "To the angel (refer to Revelation 2:1, 8, and 12)
- of the church in Sardis (located about 30 miles south-east of Thyatira; refer to Revelation 1:11)
- you (John) must write:
'The one (the Lord Jesus Christ) who is having (holding, in the sense of having authority over)...
- the seven spirits of God (those before His throne; refer to Revelation 1:4)
- and the seven stars (the angels of the 7 churches; refer to Revelation 1:16 and 20),
...says the-things-here (emphatically these things which I am telling you)...
- I knew and continue to know (perceive, see, whereby what is known is known because it has come within my sphere of perception or circle of vision, I see to the end of perceiving and knowing with my mind – I know)
- your works (your deeds, things wrought, the end-products issuing from you, the effects produced with/by your actions expending your energy),
- that you have a name (a name should be a word or phrase given to a person, etc, to be called and known-by, in order to designate and describe the distinguishing and distinctive constitution, character, quality, workings, etc - however in this case the name indicates)
- that you live (you are alive, presently and actively living your life)
- and you are dead (this is not referring to literally being dead - but to being lifeless, inactive because no effects are being produced by you according to God's intention, His standard).
You must become wakefully-watching (presently come to pass to be watchful, causing yourself to become awake and then stay awake; figuratively meaning: have your eyes open and be spiritually alert, sensitive to what God wants you to know and do) and you must set-fast (firmly fix into the correct position, establish) the remaining-things which used-to be about to die (the rest of the matters which were on the point of dying, being lifeless, inactive)...
- for I did not find and continue not to find the works that you were assigned to carry-out
- in the state of having been filled and continuing full (filled-up, made full, fulfilled, your tasks have not been accomplished)
- in the sight and presence of my God (Whom I recognize as the First, Superior or Ultimate One, the One Who has power, executes judgment, and emanates what He is, His power and light - He is the God of me - my God).
Following-on logically, you must actively call to your mind and have in memory how you received and continue to receive (to take what is given to/for you to use) and how you heard words spoken to/for you...
- and you must keep (keep an eye on those things, have them in safekeeping, and therefore not neglecting or violating but able to watch-over, take-care-of, maintain, and be observant of them)
- and you must repent (change your mind after rethinking, having afterthought regarding the truth of God’s words spoken to/for you).
Following-on logically, if it should happen at any time that you would not wakefully-watch (as verse 2 above)...
- I will have-come (I will be in the state of having arrived, I will definitely be here, present on earth)
- and my coming will be in comparison to the arrival of a thief (the one who steals by fraud or in secret, kleptomaniac - the thief comes to his target)
- and you may never personally know (the word translated “never” comes from two Greek words both meaning “no” or “not” – the double negative emphasizes the point – you would not ever know, you would not at any time have a truly active and relative knowing of)
- what sort of hour (short limited period of time)
- I will have-come down on you (for, against you).
- [The Lord Jesus Christ is not likening himself to a thief - but that the way in which he will have come will be in a manner as a thief comes in the night. In what manner does a thief come? First of all, nobody is aware of what chronological night he will come, because the thief does not make this knowledge known; and secondly, nobody knows the specific time of his coming during the night he chooses to come, because the thief also does not make this knowledge known. Therefore, nobody can truthfully say, "The thief will come at 10:30 on Tuesday night, so I will lock everything up at 10:15 on Tuesday night and be prepared and ready for his coming"! Nor can anyone see a thief coming during the night because it is dark and therefore cannot truthfully say, "I see him coming in the distance, he is definitely on his way here at this very moment, so let us prepare quickly"!]
But contrary to that behavior, you presently have (hold) a small amount of names (referring to various people) in Sardis which did not soil their outer-garments (they did not make themselves filthy or muddy in their behavior as a dirty garment; some of the outer clothing worn during the time when John was writing this book would indicate or signify a person's position, status, authority, profession, etc, within a community)...
- and they will walk in company and association with me
- in white outer-garments (clothes that are radiant, emitting light, effulgent, brilliant and bright)
- because they are worthy (of equal-value, of like-worth, as being correctly weighed on a scales, and thus deserving to/of the privilege of walking with me in white outer-garments).
The person being-victorious (actively gaining the victory, conquering)...
- in this manner will clothe himself (will throw or cast around himself as a vesture, wrap, covering)
- and I will never wipe-out (again the double negative of the word "never" emphasizes the point – I will not ever erase, blot-out, smear and completely-obliterate)
- his name out from
- the book of the life (the living spiritual record of names pertaining to God's realm; just as this writing/book of the Revelation of Jesus Christ to John was physically written on papyrus to record these words, the person who is worthy is spiritually written and so recorded and remembered in God's book pertaining to His life for He is Holy Spirit),
- and I will express-agreement (say the same words, speak agreement with, assent to the same spoken things)
- regarding/with his name
- before (in the sight and presence of) my Father (the only true God)
- and before His angels.
The person having an ear must hear (people normally have ears, but here Jesus is referring to anyone who is willing to use an ear paying attention to hear what is spoken to be heard; refer to Revelation 1:3; – he who has an ear must hear, listen attentively becoming informed and learned to the end of understanding what he hears, which is)...
- what the spirit says to the churches (the information originally from God via Jesus Christ concerning the past, present and/or future that John received to speak-forth to, before, or in front of another person or people, and which he wrote down in this writing to/for the assemblies of holy-people; refer to Revelation 19:10).'
During the current age, all holy-people are written in the book of the life because we have already received holy spirit-life and this truth cannot change. All the Judeans/Israelites who will live during the next age (which will be between the gathering-together of all holy-people away from the earth and the return of the Lord Jesus Christ back on earth) will be judged according to their works. This kind of judgment will also be applied to people who lived during the old covenant times (prior to the day of Pentecost recorded in Acts chapter 2).

Verses 7-13:
.7And to the angel of the church in Philadelphia you must write:
'The holy-one, the true-one, the (one) having the key of David, the (one) opening and not-one (person or spirit) will shut, and shutting and not-one (person or spirit) opens, says the-things-here -
.8I knew2 your works - look!, I gave2 before you a door having been opened2 which not-one-person is able to shut it - that you have small ability, and you kept my word, and you did not deny my name. .9Look!, I may give (some) from the synagogue of satan, the (people) saying themselves to be Judeans and they are not but they lie - look!, I will make them in order that they will have-come and they will worship before your feet and they may know that I loved1 you, .10that you kept my word of the patient-endurance; and I will keep you from the hour of the temptation, the (hour) being about to come on the whole inhabited-area to tempt the (people) dwelling-down on the earth. .11I come quickly. You must strongly-hold that-which you have in order that not-one-person may receive your crown.
.12The (person) being-victorious - I will make him a pillar in the interior-temple of my God, and he may never yet go-out outside, and I will write on him the name of my God and the name of the city of my God, the new Jerusalem, the (one) descending out-from heaven from my God, and my name, the new (name).
.13The (person) having an ear must hear what the spirit says to the churches.'
John continues writing the words from the Lord Jesus Christ...
- And to the angel (as verse 1 above)
- of the church in Philadelphia (located about 30 miles south-east of Sardis; refer to Revelation 1:11; the word "Philadelphia" comes from the Greek words meaning: the brotherly or friendly kind of love)
- you (John) must write:
'The holy-one (the Lord Jesus Christ is the one who is sanctified, who is in the state of corresponding to the essence of God, who is set-apart from the state of being common, defiled or unclean against God)...
- the true-one (the one who is true, emphasizing that Jesus’ quality and essence is trueness, his consistency is truth, he is actual, certain, real, genuine – as opposed to a copy such as the false, fictitious, unreal beings or gods or the idols),
- the one who has the key of David (the one who is presently holding David's key - a key is the instrument necessary to be able to bind or loosen, tie or untie, lock or unlock, close or open, exclude or receive, stop the exit or grant the entrance/access - in this context referring to the key that Jesus has providing or stopping entrance-into or exit-from the kingdom of God, and for determining how much activity or movement within it, just as David was the first king chosen and appointed by God to be king, to govern and administer, to have authority over God's people),
- the one who is opening (who causes to stand open granting entrance/access or exit)
- and not-one person or spirit will shut (none will close, no-one will at a future time prohibit access-to or exit-from what I open),
- and shutting (I am the one who is closing)
- and not-one person or spirit opens,
...says the-things-here (emphatically these things which I am telling you)...
- I knew and continue to know (as verse 1 above)
- your works (as verse 1 above) -
- look (behold, see, pay attention)!,
- I gave (willingly presented or yielded what I already have to you) and continue to give before you (in your sight and presence)
- a door that has been opened and continues open (metaphorically referring to access, opportunity, admission, as verse 7 above)
- which not one person is able to shut it (none can close this door, no-one has the able-power, the capability to close it, as verse 7 above),
- - that you have small ability (you hold able-power, capability that is small in quantity at your disposal for you to utilize),
- and you kept (as keeping an eye on, having in safekeeping, and therefore you did not neglect or violate but you watched over, took care of, maintained, and observed)
- my word (what I spoke to you, the spoken-account containing individual words constituting what I said),
- and you did not deny (disown, negate, reject)
- my name (the name of the Lord Jesus Christ includes all that the name of "Lord" and the name of "Jesus" and the name of "Christ" represent and stand for - all the authoritative-power, ability, workings, etc, that God gave to Jesus when He raised him up out-from the dead-people, and gave him the name that is above every other name, designating the resurrected Jesus being Lord and Christ; also refer to Acts 2:21 and 38; 3:6 and 16; 4:7-12, and 30; Romans 1:3 and 4; Ephesians 1:19-23; Philippians 2:9 and 10; II Thessalonians 3:6; Hebrews 1:1-4; also refer to Revelation 2:18).
- Look (behold, see, pay attention)!,
- I may give (at some point in the future it is possible that I would give to you)
- some from/of the synagogue of satan (the location where satan and his followers gather together, satan's assembly - the word translated "satan" emphasizes the devil’s opposing and adversarial attributes; the people who assemble are being adversarial towards Jesus and in total opposition to the only true God, which is why the devil is called “satan” to describe his attributes and activities in certain situations),
- the people who are saying themselves to be Judeans
- (claiming to be of the Judean/Israeli background - specifically descendants of Judah, one of the twelve brothers who fathered twelve tribes of Israel/Jacob; the record in I Kings chapter 12 details the division of the nation of Israel into the 10 northern tribes (then referred to as Israel) and the 2 southern tribes of Judah and Benjamin (then referred to as Judah) -
- and/or claiming that they are God's chosen or covenanted people as adherents of the old covenant laws of Moses but they are rejecting the Lord Jesus Christ)
- and they are not Judeans
- but contrary to being true Judeans, they lie (they speak false statements, speak a lie, commit a falsehood with their intent being to deceive, they are showing a lying statement for the purpose of misleading, they are communicating false evidence from themselves, they are liars) -
- look!,
- I will make them (I will produce, bring it about for/to them) for the purpose and result that
- they will have-come (they will be in the state of having arrived, they will definitely be here, present)
- and they will worship before your feet (they will pay homage to you, they will be obeisant towards you, recognizing you as their superior in your sight and presence, demonstrating their acceptance, belief, and submission by falling down at your feet)
- and they may know (they would personally know with a truly active and relative knowing)
- that emphatically I loved1 you (in Greek there is a definite word for “I” plus the verb meaning "I loved" giving emphasis – I myself loved you; the word "love1" comes from the Greek word agape which is God's kind of love - refer to Revelation 1:5 and the article Love in I Corinthians 13),
- that you kept my word (as verse 8 above) pertaining to the patient-endurance (bearing-up, holding, enduring and remaining upright relative to God and the things of God under any obstacles);
- and emphatically I will keep you (as keeping an eye on you, having you in safekeeping, and therefore not neglecting or violating but watching over you, taking care of, maintaining, and observing you)
- from the hour of the temptation (out from the short limited period of time consisting of trial, of being put to the test in the bad sense of being enticed to do wrong - the tempter/devil/satan is the source of evil/bad temptation to say/do what is against the only true God's intention),
- emphatically and specifically the hour that is on the point of coming on the whole inhabited-area (the entire dwelled-in parts of the world)
- to tempt (to make trial-of or try in the bad sense of putting to the test with evil and ill-intent enticing to do wrong, to try to cause to fall-aside from the truth of God's Word, to entice to disbelieve what God says)
- the people dwelling-down on the earth (who are permanently dwelling, inhabiting, settled-down on the earth, where their house is).
- I am coming quickly (I am definitely in the process of going to you with speed, swiftly - my coming occurs quickly).
- You must strongly-hold (exert your forceful-strength holding)
- what you presently have
- for the purpose and result that not-one-person may receive your crown (nobody, no-one would take the crown that you should receive, which is similar to the victory wreath or garland prize put on the head of the victor/winner of a contest or race).
The person being-victorious (actively gaining the victory, conquering)...
- - I will make him a pillar in the interior-temple of my God (not a literal pillar but in the figurative sense I will make the person being victorious a column, a firm-support with responsibility within the innermost part of my God's temple),
- and he may never yet go-out outside (he would not come out from it leaving it at any time) ,
- and I will write on him (identifying the person who is being victorious with/by)
- the name of my God (designating him as belonging to God and living within His authority, ability, etc)
- and the name of the city of my God (designating him as being a citizen belonging to this city and living within its realm; God is the One Who governs this fortified, walled town, providing protection to those dwelling within it),
- which is the new Jerusalem (the Jerusalem that is newly-made and different compared to the old city previously in existence, new in comparison to what existed previously, a new one replacing the former one),
- emphatically and specifically the one that is descending out-from heaven (moving downwards, coming down from the sky above)
- from my God,
- and my name,
- emphatically and specifically the new name (my new name, newly-made and different compared to the old name previously in existence, new in comparison to what existed previously, a new name replacing the former name - the new word or phrase given to me to be called and known-by, in order to designate and describe my distinguishing and distinctive constitution, character, quality, workings, etc).
The person having an ear must hear what the spirit says to the churches (as verse 6 above).'
Prior to the time when Jesus accomplished salvation, the "interior-temple" usually referred to the innermost-part, the most sacred area within the temple in Jerusalem, where the only true God's presence was manifested-forth during the old covenant times, called the "Holy of Holies." During the current age, God's interior-temple is not a stone or brick building or other destructible materials such as a physical temple in today's Jerusalem. God's interior-temple is made up of His people who have received the gift of holy spirit, and the Lord Jesus Christ is the foundation - it consists of all holy-people (true Christians) no matter what location we may live in on the earth. There will again be a temple including an interior-temple area in Jerusalem between Christ's coming to gather all holy-people together with him in the air and the descending of the new Jerusalem as written about in Ezekiel chapters 40-48. However, in the new Jerusalem the interior-temple will be as written in Revelation 21:22. Verses 14-22:
.14And to the angel of the church in Laodicea you must write:
'The certain-one, the witness, the believer, and true-one, the beginning of the creation of God, says the-things-here -
.15I knew2 your works, that you are neither cold nor hot - I wish you used-to-be cold or hot!, .16thus, because you are lukewarm and neither hot nor cold, I am about to spew you out-from my mouth; .17that you say that 'I am wealthy and I was wealthy2 and I have not-one need' - and you did not know2 that you are the (one who is) distressed and more-to-be-shown-mercy and poor and blind and naked - .18I give-counsel to you to buy from me gold having been set-on-fire2 from fire in order that you may be wealthy, and white outer-garments in order that you may clothe-yourself and the shame of your nakedness may not be manifested, and a salve to anoint your eyes in order that you may observe. .19I - as-many-as if-ever I may love - refute and train; therefore you must be zealous and you must repent.
.20Look!, I stood2 on the door and I knock - if-ever someone may hear my sound and he may open the door, I will go-into (his house) towards him and I will eat-a-meal with him and he with me.
.21The (person) being-victorious - I will give to him to sit-down with me in my throne, as I also was-victorious and I sat-down with my Father in His throne.
.22The (person) having an ear must hear what the spirit says to the churches.' "
John continues writing the words from the Lord Jesus Christ...
- And to the angel (as verses 1 and 7 above)
- of the church in Laodicea (located about 40 miles south-east of Philadelphia; refer to Revelation 1:11)
- you (John) must write:
'The certain-one (the Lord Jesus Christ is the one who is sure, the surety, the amen - all the promises of God are certain, sure, amen, through him; refer to II Corinthians 1:20)...
- the witness (the one who bears witness, attests to the information and knowledge that he has regarding a certain-thing, and he can therefore confirm it by giving information bringing it to light on the strength of the authority that he has; refer to Revelation 1:5),
- the believer (the one who is faithful, who believes what God says, who has faith-in, has confidence-in, trusts the information that God makes known; refer to Revelation 1:5),
- and true-one (also the one who is true, emphasizing that Jesus’ quality and essence is trueness, his consistency is truth, he is actual, certain, real, genuine – as opposed to a copy such as the false, fictitious, unreal beings or gods or the idols, as verse 7 above),
- the beginning of the creation of God (the original part of the process, the first time-wise implying others are/will-be after him more-towards the end - he is the initial starting point, the rulership because of being in the first-placed position of dignity relative to everything that came and still comes after or later-than him pertaining to God's creation, what God has brought into being or established and it is still in progress at the present time; refer to Colossians 1:15-20)
...says the-things-here (emphatically these things which I am telling you)...
- I knew and continue to know (as verses 1 and 8 above)
- your works (as verses 1 and 8 above),
- that presently you are
- neither cold (figuratively referring to behaving in a manner that is acceptable from one viewpoint)
- nor hot (boiling, zesty - figuratively referring to behaving in a manner that is also acceptable from a different viewpoint) -
- I wish you used-to-be cold or hot (I express my wish that you were continuing during a past time to be behaving one way or the other)!,
- in this manner,
- because presently you are lukewarm (in the middle - figuratively referring to being neutral, indifferent, unconcerned about behaving acceptably) and neither hot nor cold,
- I am on the point of spewing you out-from my mouth (as rejecting an unpleasant drink or piece of food from my mouth without swallowing it);
- that you say that
- 'I presently am wealthy (adjectively describing myself as: Rich)
- and I was wealthy and continue wealthy (my method of action is being rich)
- and I have not-one need (I don't have any necessity due to some lack because of not having what I need for my use, I need nothing else)' -
- and you did not know and continue not to know (perceive, see) that
- emphatically you are (in Greek there is a definite word for “you” plus the verb meaning "you are" giving emphasis – you yourself are)
- the one who is distressed (enduring toil and hardship, wretched and miserable)
- and more to be shown mercy (more in need of the withholding of merited judgment from you)
- and poor (beggarly, crouching in the begging position in need of certain things)
- and blind (you cannot see where you are going - figuratively referring to not seeing the truth of God and the things of God)
- and naked (unclad, without wearing clothes - figuratively referring to not putting-on, not wearing and using the spiritual clothing that I make available to/for you) -
- I give-counsel to you (I am presently and actively counseling you, giving you advice, my deliberate determination, my purposed will regarding your situation to have a joint resolution, as members of a council together taking counsel from one-another)
- to buy (purchase) from me (the source from whom the following proceed)
- gold, which has been set on fire from fire (ignited, burned, inflamed and glowing with heat as a furnace, fired-up - in other words it has already been refined to its purest form and it remains pure)
- for the purpose and result that you would be wealthy (be rich - in my viewpoint),
- and white outer-garments (clothes that are radiant, emitting light, effulgent, brilliant and bright, as verses 4 and 5 above)
- for the purpose and result that you would clothe-yourself (as verse 5 above)
- and the shame pertaining to your nakedness (the fact that you are naked is shameful, it causes the feeling or emotion of disgrace and guilt bringing reproach having recognized and being sorry for one's own performance of an improper, ignominious or dishonorable deed - in my viewpoint) would not be manifested (evidenced, brought to light, shown-forth - because you would not be naked anymore),
- and a salve to anoint your eyes (to rub in, to touch the surface slightly, to graze or rub your eyes over with a little mixture that you buy from me - as opposed to rubbing a medicine for some physical healing of the eye or powder/paint from the marketplace on your eyelids to demonstrate your physical riches)
- for the purpose and result that you would observe (you would presently be looking and mentally envisioning, be mentally-aware and contemplate, even though you may not physically see something with your physical eyes - in this context referring to understanding the information regarding God and the things of God from my spiritual viewpoint).
- Emphatically I (in Greek there is a definite word for "I" plus the following verbs giving emphasis)
- - as many as if ever (whomever) I would be loving (with the brotherly or friendly kind of love) -
- refute (I prove their behavior to be wrong, to convict and convince them when they are in error)
- and train (I teach them as children or young servants, which not only includes instruction but also education, discipline, correction, etc);
- following-on logically,
- you must be zealous (have a boiling or vehement passion)
- and you must repent (change your mind after rethinking, having afterthought regarding the truth of God’s words spoken to/for you, as verse 3 above).
Look (behold, see, pay attention)!, I stood and continue standing on the door (at the entrance) and I am knocking (rapping on/at the door, which includes using my voice shouting out and calling your name requesting access to go inside) -
- if it should happen at any time that someone would hear my sound (listen to my voice)
- and he would open the door (allowing or granting me access to go inside),
- I will go-into his house towards him (come from outside into the inside approaching him - this is not referring to a literal house but to the person himself)
- and I will eat a meal with him and he with me (eat a meal at the same time in company and association with one another - on a level status, a mutual, very close, intimate relationship - not as a superior master eating first and then his inferior servant eating afterwards).
The person being-victorious (actively gaining the victory, conquering)...
- - I will give to him to sit-down in company and association with me in my throne (within the sphere of action of the high seat designated for a king, and which includes all the regal authority associated with that position),
- in comparison to how emphatically I also was victorious
- and I sat-down in company and association with my Father (God) in His throne.
The person having an ear must hear what the spirit says to the churches (as verses 6 and 13 above).' "
This is the last of the seven prophetic writings to/for the angels and their different churches, which began in Revelation 2:1.
