Matthew 13:1-58

Matthew 13:1 and 2:

13:1In that day Jesus having gone out-from the house used-to sit-down beside the sea, .2and many crowds gathered-together towards him so-as-for him having embarked into a ship to sit-down, and all the crowd had stood on the shore.

Continuing from chapter 12, Jesus went out from the house and he continued for a period of time sitting down alongside the sea. A lot of throngs of people assembled together to him, with the result and consequence that he embarked (moved, entered) into a ship and he sat there instead, and all the crowd stayed standing on the shore.

Verses 3-9:

.3And he uttered-forth many-things to them in parables saying, “Look!, the (person) sowing went-out to sow, .4and in his sowing: (there were seeds) which indeed fell beside the way and the birds having come devoured them; .5but others fell on the rocky-places where there used not be much earth and immediately they arose-out because-of not having depth of earth, .6but (after the) sun’s having arose they were scorched and because-of not having a root they were dried; .7but others fell on the thorns and the thorns ascended and strangled them; .8but others fell on the earth, the beautiful (earth), and used-to give fruit: indeed that-which (gave) a hundred, and that-which (gave) sixty, and that-which (gave) thirty. .9The (person) having ears must hear."

Jesus spoke a lot of things to them in parables. The word ‘parable’ literally is to throw something beside or alongside something else. Here it is an illustration with words used to serve as a comparison in certain respects only, not taking the whole literally in every detail because every detail would not be applicable to the comparison.

He said, “Look (behold, see, pay attention to what I am saying)!, the person sowing went out for the purpose of sowing seeds. While he was sowing:

There were seeds that yielded fruit, not only those that gave a hundred, but also those that gave sixty, and those that gave thirty times as much as the original seeds themselves.

“The person having ears must hear.” People usually have ears, but here Jesus is referring to anyone who is willing to use his ears paying attention to hear what is spoken to be heard – he who hears must hear, listen attentively becoming informed and learned to the end of understanding what he hears, which is what I am saying to you.
