Luke 9:1-62

Luke 9:1-6:
9:1But having called-together the twelve with-himself he gave to them ability and authority on all the devils and to attend-to diseases, .2and he apostled them to herald-forth the kingdom of God and to heal, .3and he said towards them, "You must lift nothing for the way, neither a rod, nor a little-bag, nor bread, nor silver, nor to have two inner-garments; .4and into which ever house you may go there you must remain and you must go-out from-there; .5and as-many-as ever may not accept you, having gone-out2 away-from that city you must shake-away the raised-dust from your feet for a witness on them." .6And going-out they used-to go-through according to a village good-messaging and attending everywhere.

After Jesus called the 12 (invited the 12 apostles; refer to Luke 6:13) in conjunction with himself, he gave to them...

...and he apostled them (sent them forth/away from himself on this specific mission or assignment)...

Jesus said towards the twelve...

...and into whatever house (dwelling) you would go, in that location it is imperative that you remain (stay, continue) and you must go-out from-there (continuing up-to the time when you would exit that location - not going to other places and then back again but stay in that house as your base until you are ready to go somewhere else). Also, as many people as at any time would not accept you (welcome you, subjectively-receive or willingly take you being presented to them), after you have gone-out and continue gone away from that city (exited that town) it is imperative that...

And going/coming out so as to proceed on this assignment, they were continuing to go/come through according to a village (passing from one hamlet to another hamlet in the open countryside without walls)...

This was Jesus' third time traveling around teaching the people (refer to Matthew 4:23-25, Mark 1:35-39, and Luke 4:42-44 for the first, and Luke 8:1-3 for the second) and he also apostled the twelve to herald-forth the kingdom of God and to heal.

As we read the four books of Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John, we must understand that Jesus was in the process of accomplishing redemption and salvation. Therefore the 'Acts chapter 2' gift of holy spirit (which is the spirit of Christ) that God made available by means of the Lord Jesus Christ on the day of Pentecost, could NOT be given to anybody before that day because it was not available to be given.

However, God was able to give certain men/women holy spirit conditionally, which was upon the condition that he/she would believe and obey what God said. God gave holy spirit conditionally to Jesus as recorded in Luke 3:21 and 22, and then during Jesus' ministry at that time Jesus was able to delegate this authority to others so that they too could do what is recorded in verse 2 above. These twelve conditionally received holy spirit from God to enable them to carry-out what Jesus told them to do.

Verses 7-9:
.7But Herod the tetrarch heard all-things coming-to-pass and he used-to wholly-despair because-of the-thing to be said by some-people that John was raised-up out-from dead-people, .8but by some-people that Elijah was brought-to-light, but other-people that some prophet of the old-people resurrected; .9but Herod said, "John I beheaded, but who is this-person concerning whom I hear things-of-this-kind?" - and he used-to seek-after to see him.

This Herod refers to Herod the tetrarch or Herod Antipas (son of Herod the Great) who was ruler of a fourth-part of this Roman-occupied province and was subject to the Roman Emperor.

He heard what was spoken about all of the things coming-to-pass (everything happening, occurring regarding Jesus and his activities) and during that past time, historically, he was continuing to wholly-despair (he was thoroughly perplexed, entirely without resources as to what to do about Jesus) on account of what was being said...

...but Herod said, "John emphatically I beheaded (in Greek there is a definite word for “I” plus the verb meaning “I beheaded” giving emphasis – I myself decapitated him, cut his head away from him - he is definitely dead), but who is this-person about whom I hear things of this sort (such things)?" - and he was continuing to seek-after to see him (looking for a way to perceive Jesus, to see him to the end of perceiving and knowing him with his mind).

Verses 10-17:
.10And having returned the apostles told him as-many-things-as they did; and having taken them beside (himself) he departed privately into a city being called Bethsaida. .11But the crowds having known followed him; and having accepted them he used-to utter-forth to them concerning the kingdom of God and he used-to-heal the (people) having a need of attendance. .12But the day began to lean, and having come-towards (him) the twelve said to him, "You must loosen the crowd in order that having journeyed into the circling-round villages and fields they may disunite and find supply because we are here in a deserted place." .13But he said towards them, "You must give to them to eat." But the (twelve) said, "There are not with us more than five breads and two fishes, since (it is) not-something having journeyed we may buy foods with-a-view-for all this people" - .14for there used-to-be as-though five-thousand adult-males. But he said towards his learning-disciples, "You must cause them to lean-down - groups by-fifty. .15And thus they did and they leaned-down all-people-together. .16But having taken the five breads and the two fishes having observed-upwardly into the heaven he blessed them, and he broke (them) down and he used-to-give to the learning-disciples to put-beside the crowd. .17And all-people ate and were fed, and they lifted the-thing having exceeded for them of broken-pieces - twelve baskets.

After the apostles returned (turned or came back to Jesus from their assignment referred to in verses 1-6 above and they were all together again) they told him as many things as they did (they narrated, went-through, related in detail to him about the many things that they performed).

Then after Jesus took the twelve men beside/alongside himself he departed privately (he moved under, stealthily, secretly with the twelve according to their own selves, by themselves, aside from everybody else, in the sense of making room without prior arrangement with other people wanting to be unperceived and without noise or notice as to what he and the twelve were doing, putting space between where he was with the twelve and their destination which was) into a city being called Bethsaida (a deserted place in the township of Bethsaida on the north-east side of the Sea of Galilee).

But after the throngs of people had personal knowledge of where he and the twelve were going, they followed him; and Jesus accepted them (he fully welcomed them, subjectively received them, willingly took what was presented to him which were the crowds) and during that past time he was continuing to utter-forth (speak) to them about God's kingdom and to heal (recover from illness) the people who have a need of attendance (those who have a necessity due to lack, a need for their use of therapeutic treatment, therapy, care as necessary).

However, when the day began to lean (the daylight started to incline, bow, bend in the sky, after it became evening), and after the 12 men came/went towards Jesus they said to him, "You must loosen the crowd (let go, unbind, unfasten, release the throng of people) for the purpose and result that after they have journeyed (passed, traveled) into the surrounding villages and fields they would disunite (loosen down one from another so as not to be a crowd anymore) and they would find supply (locate provision such as wheat, food items to eat and drink) because we are here in a deserted place (as a desert being desolate and uninhabited and so there is no place to get food to eat)."

Jesus said towards them, "Emphatically you must give (in Greek there is a definite word for “you” plus the verb meaning “you must give” giving emphasis – it is imperative that you yourselves give) to them to eat."

But the twelve said, "There are not with us comparatively more than 5 breads (loaves of bread) and 2 fishes, if/since it is not something (an exception, it is not the case, it is not true) that having journeyed emphatically we would buy foods (we ourselves would pay the price, purchase foods for eating, as buying them in a market-place) with a view for all this people (into, directed to, for the purpose of feeding every one of the mass or group of people collectively as one unit, one united assembly; this word usually refers to the descendants of Israel/Jacob)" - for during that past time there was continuing to be as-though 5,000 adult-males (grown men).

Jesus said towards his learning-disciples (students), "You must cause them to lean-down (to lean in the usual position when eating a meal or reclining at a feast in eastern culture) - in groups of fifties (50 per group or 100 per group which is 2 times 50). And in this manner the learning-disciples did (they performed what Jesus told them) and they leaned-down all people together (every one of them).

After Jesus took (received from his learning-disciples) the five breads and the two fishes, and after he observed-upwardly into the heaven (he looked up being mentally aware and contemplating, even though he may not have physically seen anything with his physical eyes, directed to the heaven, as opposed to earth; by observing upwardly into the heaven it would be understood by others that Jesus was communicating with God Who was involved in what Jesus was doing)...

And all-people ate and were fed (they were filled with food, as the animals eat fodder, the hay or grass that is made available to them to eat whenever they want to and become fat being satisfied with enough eaten at that time).

They lifted the-thing having exceeded for them of broken-pieces (they took up and carried what was in excess, the abundance of the pieces that Jesus had broken to make available for the people and were eaten by them, the leftover fragments of bread and fish) - twelve baskets (12 wicker baskets).

Jesus organized what was done to help the people; he was the one who ruled or governed this situation, having received information and help from God. This was an important event and is recorded in the four books of Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John. This event was a type or pattern of the sacrifice of the Lord Jesus Christ and of the resulting blessing which he would bestow towards/on those people who would be willing to accept and receive it when it would be made available to them (refer to Acts chapters 2-4; and I Corinthians 10:16 and 17).

The Book of John informs us that the time of this event was close to the feast of the Judeans (before, prior to the celebration of a certain festival), which was not the Passover but it may have been the Blowing of Trumpets or the Feast of Tabernacles, both within 2 weeks of each other during September and October (1 Tishri and 15-21 Tishri in the Judean calendar) in the year 27 A.D.

Verses 18-27:
.18And it came-to-pass in him being praying according to only (himself) the learning-disciples used-to be-together with him, and he asked them saying, "Whom do the crowds say me to be?" .19And the (learning-disciples) having answered said, "John the baptizer, but other-people Elijah, but other-people that a prophet of the old-people resurrected." .20But he said to them, "But whom do you say me to be?" And Peter having answered said, "The Christ of God." .21But the (one) having censured them charged to say this to not-one-person, .22having said that, "It is necessary (for) the son of man to suffer many-things, and to be disapproved from the elders and chief-priests and scribes, and to be killed, and to be raised-up the third day." .23But he used-to-say towards all-people, "If someone intends to come behind me he must deny himself and lift his cross daily and follow me; .24for who ever may intend to save his soul will destroy it, but who ever may destroy his soul by-reason-of me this-person will save it. .25For what man is profited having gained the whole world but having destroyed himself or having been caused-to-receive-loss? .26For who ever may be ashamed-of me and my words, the son of man will be ashamed-of this-person whenever he may come in the glory of himself and of the Father and of the holy angels. .27But I say to you truly, there are some of the same (people) having stood2, the (people who) may never taste death until ever they may see the kingdom of God."

While Jesus is praying according to only himself (communicating to/with God, speaking generally towards God by himself, alone without other people present with him), it happened that the learning-disciples (students) were continuing to be in conjunction with him, and he asked them (with familiarity he inquired directly from them for information on this topic) saying, "Whom do the throngs of people say me to be?" The learning-disciples answered by saying...

But Jesus said to them, "But whom do you (emphatically you, you yourselves) say me to be?"

And Peter having answered said, "The Christ of God." The word "Christ" means the "anointed-one" or "Messiah" - in the lands and time-period of the writing of the Bible holy oil was poured on the high priest of God to begin his ministry for God, and it was also used to anoint kings. Many people and things were anointed with holy oil to signify their making holy/sanctified for a specific purpose, etc, which can be read about in many scriptures in the Bible (refer to Exodus 30:22-33; Acts 2:36, and 4:27, and 10:38). Peter told Jesus that Jesus is THE CHRIST.

However, Jesus censured his learning-disciples (he inflicted penalty or infringement, he reprimanded, he judged by estimating the correct honor or value due in this situation which was that) he charged (passed a message on from himself to them) to say this to not-one-person (no-one, nobody about Jesus himself being the Christ), after he said that...

During that past time Jesus said towards all-people (everybody present in that location)...

Jesus was prophesying about the time when God by means of Jesus after his resurrection would give the gift of holy spirit to mankind, which occurred on the day of Pentecost recorded in Acts chapter 2.

The son of man

The phrase "the son of man" refers to Jesus himself and emphasizes that he is the one who is descended from the man whom God created and made and formed as recorded in Genesis chapters 1 and 2, the first man Adam to whom God gave dominion, etc, on/over the earth. However this first man gave it to satan as recorded in Genesis chapter 3. In accordance with God's promise - Jesus is the seed of the woman (refer to Genesis 3:15).

Today of course Jesus has accomplished redemption and salvation and so he is the resurrected Christ, the second man, having received his spiritual body, the life of which is holy spirit (not soul/breath life). Therefore the title "the son of man" is not relevant to holy-people (Christians) because true Christians have the spirit of Christ within them - Christ being the new man, the last man. After the time that all Christians will be gathered together away from the earth, Christ Jesus will come to be present on earth for those who will believe at that time among the nation of Israel and the other nations, the Gentiles, as "the son of man" and he will exercise the authority that he has, his dominion on/over the earth having regained and replaced the first man and all that the first man gave to the devil/satan. The resurrected Christ Jesus is now second-in-command to God his Father. You may like to review the Chart of Events.

Verses 28-36:
.28But it came-to-pass after these words as-though eight days, having taken-beside (himself) Peter and John and James, he ascended into the mountain to pray; .29and in him praying the seen-thing of his face became different and his outer-garment lightening-out white as-lightning. .30And look!, two adult-males used-to-be uttering-forth-together with him, the-ones-who used-to-be Moses and Elijah, .31the (ones) having been seen in glory used-to-say his exodus which he used-to be about to fulfill in Jerusalem. .32But Peter and the (men) together-with him used-to-be having been pressure-weighed2 with sleep, but having throughly-wakefully-watched they saw his glory and the two adult-males, the (adult-males) having stood-together2 with him; .33and it came-to-pass in them throughly-being-separated away-from him Peter said towards Jesus, "Captain, it is beautiful (for) us to be here; also let us make three tents, one for you and one for Moses and one for Elijah...." - not having known2 that-which he says; .34but (during) his saying these-things there became a cloud and it used-to shadow-on them but they were caused-fear in them going into the cloud. .35And there became a sound out-from the cloud saying, "This is My son, the (son) having been selected, you must hear him." .36And in the sound's coming-to-pass Jesus only was found, and they were silent; and they announced nothing to not-one-person in those days of which-things they saw2.

It came-to-pass as-though eight days (it happened, became, occurred as counting 8 days including only portions of 2 of those days - about one week) after these words (what Jesus spoke, the spoken-account of God's inner thoughts containing individual words which Jesus spoke in verses 18-27 above), having taken (received) Peter and John and James (Jacob) beside himself, Jesus ascended into the mountain to pray (he went-up into the mount/hill to communicate to/with God, to speak generally towards God). While Jesus is praying...

But during that past time Peter and the men, John and James, who were in conjunction with him were continuing to be in the state of being pressure-weighed and continuing pressure-weighed with sleep (weighed down, with the emphasis being on the pressure and not on a physical heaviness of a load or burden to be carried - in this context it was with sleep, they were extremely tired physically)...

This was caused to be seen by Peter, John, and James. It was presented to be perceived with their eyes and known by them. This is how God chose to communicate this extremely significant event to them. Both of these great prophets, Moses (representing Jesus to complete the law – including Jesus’ sacrificial death) and Elijah (representing Jesus to fulfill prophecy – including Jesus’ resurrection and glorious life), could not have actually been there at that time because they had died long before this event occurred.

With the exception of Jesus the Christ and excluding those who receive the gift of holy spirit between Acts 2:1-4 and Christ’s coming to gather holy-people/Christians (refer to I Thessalonians 4:13-17), all other dead-people will not be resurrected until Christ will resurrect dead-people at a still-future time, as recorded in the Book of Revelation chapter 20. Both Moses and Elijah are still dead. They were types/patterns of the Christ. What Jesus and the three learning-disciples with him saw was a seen-object; it was presented to their eyes so that they could see and perceive and know it.

And it happened - while the 2 adult-males are throughly being separated away from him (caused by God to be put apart from Jesus, severed asunder and so not being with him anymore) - Peter said towards Jesus...

The purpose of making these 3 tents (sometimes translated ‘tabernacles’) would be for Jesus, Moses, and Elijah to have their own covered places to come and meet with God at whatever time they would like to do so from that day forward. However, the reason for Peter saying such a thing was that he had not known and continued not to know (perceive to the end of understanding with his mind) what he is saying.

But during Peter's saying these-things there became a cloud (a particular cloud, not an indefinite cloudy mass that we see sometimes in the sky, but a specific cloud) and it was continuing to shadow-on them (putting its shadow on them, overshadowing them – this is referring to their being covered-by and enveloped-within the consistency of the cloud) but the 3 men, Peter and John and James were caused-fear (made fearful, having fright, being afraid at the consequences of their performance of any wrong behavior, and therefore manifesting the awe and respect that ought to be shown towards God and Jesus) while they were going into the cloud as it came around them.

And there became a sound out-from the cloud (a voice came to pass originating from it) saying...

During the time that the sound/voice was coming to pass (happening, becoming, occurring) Jesus only was found (he alone was there - this voice did not come from Moses or Elijah or any human-being), and emphatically they were silent (they themselves - Peter and John and James were hushed, they stopped speaking). Also, they announced nothing to not-one-person (they related, told the message, reported not one thing to anyone, nobody, no-one) during those days regarding the things which they saw (physically perceived with their eyes, and this fact did not change).

God had just given His son Jesus detailed information about his exodus (departure) from where he was at that time and into his future glory after his resurrection, via the seen-object of Moses and Elijah talking with him. Moses and Elijah were not there but this is how God chose to communicate the totality of what He gave Jesus to believe at this time.

Then God declared His thoughts regarding the one who would accomplish God's plan of redemption and salvation once and for all. Jesus was to be the one speaking to God on behalf of the people, making intercession, offering the correct sacrifice for reconciliation, which in this case was himself, the lamb of God. God told Jesus about His acceptance of this sacrifice by resurrection and future glory.

God also instructed Peter and John and James what they must do relative to Jesus – you must hear him. Jesus was also a prophet receiving information from God to speak to one or more of God’s people regarding and during many different circumstances and situations at that time.

Note: As in verses 28-36 above, Luke writes the Greek verb ginomai many times, which can be translated into English as "to become" or "to come-to-pass" or "to come-into-being" depending on the context so as to communicate its meaning in English - therefore it is not always possible to translate it the same way for all usages. The basic meaning is that what the verb is referring to in a sentence was not this way prior to that time but it became this way.

Verses 37-45:
.37But it came-to-pass on the next day (after) their coming-down from the mountain a big crowd met him; .38and look!, an adult-male from the crowd cried-aloud saying, "Teacher, I supplicate you to observe upon my son because he is an only-begotten to me; .39and look!, a spirit takes him and suddenly shouts, and it convulses him with foam and with-difficulty it departs away-from him crushing him; .40and I supplicated your learning-disciples in order that they may throw it out and they were not caused-to-be-able." .41But Jesus having answered said, "Oh generation unbelieving and having been throughly-turned2, until when will I be with you and hold-myself-up-with you? You must lead your son towards here." .42But yet (during) his coming-towards him the devil tore and convulsed him together. But Jesus censured the spirit, the unclean (spirit), and he healed the child and gave him away to his father. And all-people used-to-be shocked on the greatness of God. But (during) all-people's marveling on all-things which he used-to-do, he said towards his learning-disciples, .44"You must put these words into your ears, for the son of man is about to be given-over into (the) hands of men." .45But the (learning-disciples) used-to-not-know this spoken-matter and it used-to-be having been covered2 from them in order that they may not perceive it, and they used-to be fearful to ask him concerning this spoken-matter.

It came-to-pass (happened, became, occurred) on the day next in order after Jesus, Peter, John, and James went down away from the mountain - a throng of many people came to meet together with Jesus; and look (behold, see - in the sense of calling attention - pay attention)!, an adult-male from the crowd cried-aloud (a grown-man shouted out-loud, bellowed) saying...

This was the father’s opinion of the situation. But Jesus answered by saying to them (all of them, not only the father)...

After Jesus' rhetorical questions, since they did not know the answers but it may have helped some of them there to realize that Jesus' time with them was limited, he told the father who is a member of the "generation" to bring his son to him.

Yet while the son was going towards Jesus the devil tore (the demon caused him to rend, as rending clothes, breaking-rank, bursting out-from a line of soldiers) and convulsed him together (caused his body to move together as tearing or pulling him in different directions, it threw him into a fit or spasm, a violent attack on him causing distortion). This word translated "devil" is the Greek word daimonion, which was used in Greek mythology (falsehoods) to describe supernatural intermediary beings between false-gods and men. In reality, these are the lower-ranking demons, evil spirits like “privates” which take their direction from the higher-ranking evil spirits (daimon) in the devil's "army" which take their orders and direction from the chief or top-ranking devil-spirit himself who is the devil/satan.

But Jesus censured the spirit (he inflicted penalty or infringement, he reprimanded, he judged by estimating the correct honor or value due in this situation which was punishment for the offense committed by the devil-spirit, demon), emphatically and specifically the unclean spirit (a spirit that is not free from mixture of that-which is against the only true God, mixed with something else, having impurity from God's viewpoint mixed with it), and Jesus healed the child (caused him to recover from that illness) and gave him away/back to his father. In this particular case it was a devil-spirit causing this child to be epileptic - not a physical disorder or disability.

And all of the people used-to-be shocked (for a period of time everyone continued to be exceedingly-struck in their minds) based on the greatness of God (God's magnificence, majesty, His condition or state of being great, large in magnitude, quality, rank, importance, depth, measure, degree, eminence, etc).

But while all of the people were marveling (were astonished and looked-on with wonder and amazement) based on all-things which he was doing (everything that Jesus was performing) during that past time, Jesus said towards his learning-disciples...

But during that past time the learning-disciples did not know this spoken-matter (they were personally unaware or ignorant of the full meaning about the saying spoken by Jesus, the speech that is only a portion of the whole Word of God but in itself contains the specific discourse necessary for the particular situation or circumstance, here referring to the spoken-matter concerning his death and resurrection, as recorded in Matthew 17:22 and 23 plus Mark 9:31, which would be necessary for the redemption and salvation of mankind by means of the Lord Jesus Christ)...

...and they were continuing to be fearful to ask Jesus (afraid to inquire from him, to request him to give them details) about this spoken-matter.

[Reference: Matthew 17:14-23; Mark 9:14-32.]

Verses 46-50:
.46But a through-calculation came-into (their heart) among them, the-thing: who ever may be greater of them; .47but Jesus, having known2 the through-calculation of their heart, having taken-hold-on a young-child stood it with himself .48and he said to them, "Who if-ever may accept this young-child on my name, accepts me; and who if-ever may accept me accepts the (One) having apostled me; for the (person) being-from-the-beginning smaller among you all this-person is great." .49But John having answered said, "Captain, we saw someone in your name throwing-out devils, and we used-to-hinder him because he does not follow with us." .50But Jesus said towards him, "You must not hinder, for he-who is not against you is on behalf of you."

A through-calculation (a reckoning through-and-through, thorough reasoning, dispute, logical computation) came/went into their heart among them, which was: who ever may be greater of them (which one of themselves is comparatively larger in importance, etc, relative-to one another).

After Jesus knew (perceived) and continued to know the through-calculation of their heart (the center/core of their being, as one group or body of people having one heart), and after he took-hold-on a young-child (received or caught a little boy or girl into his arms) he stood it with himself (at rest beside or in proximity to himself) and he said to them...

When the Scriptures talk about something being done resting/based on the name of someone or something else, we ought to understand that it incorporates the fullness of everything involved with the one named, here it is the name of Jesus (refer to Matthew 1:21) who is the Lord and the Christ (refer to Acts 2:36). Jesus is not talking about literally accepting little children – Jesus is saying that anyone who would accept a humble-person (humble relative to God and Jesus), basing his acceptance upon the name of Jesus the Christ, would be accepting Jesus – not literally of course, but from God’s and Jesus’ viewpoint his acceptance would be the same, and it will be judged as such by them – and consequently that person would be accepting God because God is the One Who apostled Jesus.

John answered (judicially replied to what Jesus said) by saying...

But Jesus said towards John, "You must not hinder (it is imperative that you do not block, prevent him), for the person who is not against you (not justly putting something forward as a case against you to be judged) is on behalf of you (in your interests, on your behalf)."

Verses 51-62:
.51But it came-to-pass in the fulfillment (of) the days of his taking-up also he set-fast the face to journey into Jerusalem .52and he apostled messengers before his face; and having journeyed they went into a village of Samaritans as to prepare for him, .53and they did not accept him because his face used-to-be journeying into Jerusalem. .54But the learning-disciples James and John having known said, "Lord, do you intend we may say fire to descend from the heaven and to consume them?" .55But having turned he censured them; .56and they journeyed into a different village. .57And (during) their journeying in the way someone said towards him, "I will follow you where if-ever you may go-away"; .58and Jesus said to him, "The foxes have holes and the birds of the heaven lodgings, but the son of man does not have where he may lean the head." .59But he said towards a different-person, "You must follow me"; but the (person) said, "Lord, you must permit me having gone-away firstly to bury my father"; .60but he said to him, "You must leave the dead-people to bury the dead-people of themselves, but you going-away must throughly-message the kingdom of God." .61But a different-person also said, "I will follow you, Lord, but firstly you must permit me to arrange-myself-away-from the (people) into my house"; .62but Jesus said towards him, "Not-one-person having thrown the hand on a plow and observing into the-things behind is well-put for the kingdom of God."

It came-to-pass (happened, became, occurred) during the fulfillment (the filling altogether, the complete or whole fullness) of the days of his taking-up (the period of time leading up to Jesus' death, resurrection, and ascension or reception by God of him upwards into heaven) - in addition emphatically he set-fast the face for the purpose of journeying (in Greek there is a definite word for “he” plus the verb meaning “he set-fast” giving emphasis – he himself firmly fixed his face in the direction to pass, travel) into Jerusalem.

Jesus had been given details about his death and resurrection and future glory as recorded in verses 28-36 above, and from that time onwards he was fully-aware of the consequences of his actions in accordance with God's Word regarding his assignment for the purpose of redeeming and saving mankind from permanent death. The events recorded in verses 51-62 occurred during Jesus' journey to Jerusalem from Galilee via Samaria for the Feast of Tabernacles in October (15th Tishri in the Judean calendar), 27 A.D. This was not his final journey into Jerusalem but it was in addition to it.

Also, Jesus apostled (sent forth/away on this specific assignment) messengers before his face (ahead of, in front of, in advance of, prior to himself time-wise). These "messengers" refer to men; the word comes from the Greek word aggello which means to tell or deliver a message in official service via words and/or actions, and therefore this word can be translated into English as “angel” or “messenger.” These messengers were the human men whom Jesus apostled on this mission. These men were not spirit-beings but they did the same function for Jesus. We should note that the Bible shows us that no human-being was or is or will be a spirit-being angel!

After these messengers journeyed they went into a village (a hamlet in the open countryside which was without walls) in the region of Samaritans as to prepare (in the way/manner to make it ready) for him, and they did not accept him (the people in that village did not welcome, subjectively receive, willingly take Jesus to themselves, they did not receive him with open arms - they rejected his proposed arrival and presence in their village) because during that past time his face was continuing to be focused on journeying into Jerusalem. Samaritans were people of the Israeli background who had mixed with people of the Gentile background during the time of captivity (refer to II Kings chapter 17). They claimed that Mount Gerizim was the location to worship God (not Jerusalem) and therefore they would not be going to Jerusalem for the Feast of Tabernacles.

But after the learning-disciples (students) James and John knew (perceived from what the messengers reported to them) regarding that village's rejection of Jesus, they said to him...

However, after Jesus turned towards James and John he censured them (he inflicted penalty or infringement, he reprimanded, he judged by estimating the correct honor or value due in this situation which was punishment for the offense committed by them [some Greek texts include additional words but the earlier texts and papyri omit them]). James and John should not attempt to force God into doing something as a result of their saying it - if something is to be done according to God's will then God will make His intention known and they should do what God says. Jesus knew this truth and so he censured them from trying to perform something against God's will.

And they journeyed into a different village (a village of a different kind/sort - referring to one where the people would accept Jesus).

While they were journeying in the way (path, road) someone said towards Jesus, "I will follow you where if-ever you may go-away (any place that you would go away from here)." Jesus said to him...

Jesus did not have any place to incline or lay his head at that time which was before Jesus accomplished redemption and salvation for mankind and regained all that Adam gave to the devil/satan. Jesus had no place to call 'home' on earth at that time – not even like the foxes and the birds.

Jesus said towards a different-person (of a different kind/sort; the difference was the person's response), "You must follow me (it is imperative that you come after/behind me)"; but the person said, "Lord (Master [some Greek texts omit this word]), you must permit/allow me firstly to go-away and to bury my father". This person was excusing himself from being with Jesus, asking to go home and be with his family instead, and then whenever his father would die he would be able to bury him and take care of family business as his responsibility – he said that only after that time he would follow Jesus.

Jesus said to him...

Jesus had previously said that people must firstly seek-after God's kingdom and righteousness. Now he uses a figure of speech whereby he is emphasizing that those who do not follow him are considered to be dead by God, even though they may still be living in the physical/natural and flesh category, but they will eventually become dead permanently. The figuratively dead people can bury the literally dead people. No person can enter the kingdom of God without receiving holy spirit-life.

But a different-person (of a different kind/sort; the difference was the person's response) also said towards Jesus, "I will follow you, Lord, but firstly you must permit/allow me to make the arrangements to be away from the people into my house (at home, with the household of people inside my dwelling)."

Jesus said towards him...
