John 20:1-31

Between John 19:42 and 20:1, other events occurred as recorded in Matthew 27:62 - 28:4, Mark 16:1, and Luke 23:56(b).

John 20:1-10:
20:1But on (day-)one of the sabbaths Mary the Magdalene goes early, (during) darkness yet being, into the memorial-place and she observes the stone having been lifted2 out-from the memorial-place. .2Therefore she runs and goes towards Simon Peter and towards the other learning-disciple whom Jesus loved, and she says to them, "They lifted the Lord out-from the memorial-place and we did not know2 where they put him!"
.3Therefore Peter went-out and the other learning-disciple, and they went into the memorial-place, .4but the two ran together and the other learning-disciple ran-before quickly of Peter and came first into the memorial-place, .5and having bent-alongside he observes the little-linen-cloths lying, yet-indeed he did not go-into (it). .6Therefore also Simon Peter comes following him and went into the memorial-place and views-with-attention the little-linen-cloths lying .7and the handkerchief which was on his head not lying with the little-linen-cloths but without (them) having been wrapped2 into one place. .8Therefore then also the other learning-disciple, the (learning-disciple) having come first, went into the memorial-place and he saw and believed; .9for not-yet they had known the writing that it is necessary (for) him to be resurrected out-from dead-people. .10Therefore the learning-disciples went-away again towards them.

On the first day of reckoning the seven sabbaths to Pentecost (Sunday 18th Nisan beginning at sunset, also the first day of the week) Mary the Magdalene came by herself early in the morning - while it was still dark (before sunrise) - into the memorial-place (the sepulchral monument, tomb, the place which had been hewn out of stone to preserve the memory of the dead Jesus put inside; refer to John 19:41 and 42).

However, Mary observes (looks at, mentally envisions and contemplates) the stone that has already been lifted (taken up and carried) out from the memorial-place (refer to Matthew 28:2-4). By this time Jesus had already been resurrected by God after 3 days and 3 nights (72 hours) of being buried in the earth - he was buried late on Wednesday, 14th Nisan before sunset, and therefore he was raised late on Saturday, 17th Nisan before sunset.

Following-on logically, she runs (made haste, hurried, quickly moved) and approaches Simon Peter and the other learning-disciple whom Jesus used-to love during a past time (before he died he was continuing to love this student with the brotherly or friendly kind of love, the expressed love that close family members or friends evidence towards each other - again identifying Lazarus but this time with the brotherly love that was between them).

Mary says to them, "They lifted (took-up and carried) the Lord/Master out from the memorial-place and we did not know (you 2 men and I did not perceive, see) and we continue not to know at what location they placed him!"

Therefore Peter went out and the other student, and they were going into the memorial-place, but the two men were running together (at the same time) and the other student ran before quickly (with speed, swiftly in advance, in front, ahead) of Peter and came first into the memorial-place. After he bent alongside (moved into position beside, by-the-side-of or near-by the object with his head bent forward intently peering or looking), he observes the small strips of linen-cloth laying on the ground (which Nicodemus and his servants had put on Jesus' dead body late in the evening of Wednesday 14th Nisan; refer to John 19:39 and 40) - but Jesus' body was not wrapped inside the small strips of linen-cloth anymore! Emphatically indeed Lazarus did not go into it (he still did not enter the memorial-place where the dead body had been laid).

Therefore in addition Simon Peter going after (behind) him, entered the memorial-place, and he attentively views (is contemplating) the little linen-cloths laying on the ground and the handkerchief (napkin, face-cloth) which used-to be on Jesus' head not laying in company and association with the little linen-cloths (not where Jesus' head would have been next to the strips of cloth on his body), but on the contrary, it was without (apart, separated from) them having already been wrapped and continuing wrapped (rolled-up, folded-in) into one location.

Jesus had been resurrected by God giving him his new spiritual body and so he passed through the little linen-cloths and handkerchief. However, he took the time to fold his head wrapping neatly separated from the strips of cloth that were around the rest of his body.

Following-on logically from Peter going inside the memorial-place, at that time in addition the other student, emphatically and specifically the student who came first, entered it and...

...John the writer of this book explains that in truth, the learning-disciples (referring specifically to the 12 whom Jesus had chosen before his death) still had not known and continued not to know (perceive, see to the end of perceiving and knowing in their minds) the writing that...

Therefore the two learning-disciples (Peter and Lazarus) went away from the memorial-place again towards the other 11 whom Jesus had chosen.

With reference to verse 9 above, the reason why John wrote about Jesus being resurrected “out-from dead-people” is because at the time of his resurrection he was the only one raised-up/resurrected and given his new spiritual body. Everyone else who had died by that time remains dead in the grave. The learning-disciples with Jesus did not understand the fullness of this when he talked to them about it before his death and resurrection.
