John 19:1-3:
19:1Therefore then Pilate took Jesus and whipped (him); .2and the soldiers having weaved a crown from thorns put-on his head and clothed him (with) a purple outer-garment, .3and they went towards him and said, "Joy, the king of the Judeans," and they gave raps to him.
Following-on logically from the events recorded in John 18:38-40, at that time Pilate took Jesus (received him so as to use) and he whipped him (caused Jesus to be scourged, flogged).
Also, the soldiers (people being in service, soldiering during battle/war in military service)...
...and during that past time they were coming towards him (they spent time going towards him, repeating it on several occasions) and were saying...
...and they gave raps (strikes, quick sharp blows) to him.

Verses 4-7:
.4And Pilate went-out again outside and says to them, "Look!, I lead him outside to you in order that you may know that I find not-one cause in him." .5Therefore Jesus went-out outside carrying the thorny crown and the purple outer-garment; and he says to them, "Look!, the man." .6Therefore when the chief-priests and the assistants saw him they cried-out saying, "You must crucify, you must crucify." Pilate says to them, "You must take him and crucify him, for I do not find a cause in him." .7The Judeans answered him, "We have a law and according to the law he owes-it to die because he made himself God's son."
Pilate went out again (a second, another, further time, once again) outside of the praetorium and says to the Judeans...
Therefore Jesus came out outside to where Pilate was facing the crowd of Judeans carrying (bearing, wearing) the thorny crown and the purple outer-garment (as verse 2 above); and Pilate says to them...
Jesus was the one man from fallen mankind receiving the full consequences of sin against the only true God - he was the sacrificial lamb (refer to John 1:29). By this time he was mocked, brutally and savagely beaten, and bloody.
Therefore when the chief/high priests and the assistants (attendants; referring to the Judean temple guard) saw him they cried-out (made an outcry, clamor, they screamed) saying...
Pilate says to them...
The Judeans answered him...
