John 16:1-33
John 16:1-6:
16:1"These-things I uttered-forth2 to you in order that you may not be offended. .2They will make you away-from-synagogue, but an hour comes in order that every-person having killed you may consider to offer a rendering-of-service to God - .3and they will do these-things because they did not know the Father neither me; .4but these-things I uttered-forth2 to you in order that whenever their hour may come you may remember them that I said to you; and I did not say these-things to you from (the) beginning because I was with you, .5but now I go towards the (One) having sent me and not-one-person from you asks me, 'Where do you go?' - .6but because I uttered-forth2 these-things to you the sorrow filled2 your heart.
Jesus continues speaking to his learning-disciples (students) while they were going towards the Mount of Olives where the garden of Gethsemane is located at the west side.
- "These-things I uttered-forth (spoke) and continue to utter-forth to you
- for the purpose and result that you would not be offended (caused to stumble, whereby these things would be a trap-stick as when bait is attached, and if you strike or hit against it, it springs the trap and you get caught; caused to stumble off of the truth of God's Word to/for you, offended because you would not know and take heed to what I am speaking to you regarding these things).
- They will make you away-from-synagogue (produce, bring about, make the action of excommunicating you from the assembly, as the place where the Israelites/Judeans gathered together every sabbath and special days to hear readings from the law of Moses, etc),
- but contrary to that, an hour is coming (a limited period of time is presently in the process of going from its starting point towards its ending point of accomplishment)
- for the purpose and result that every-person having killed you (all/everyone who has put an end to the life of my students, caused the life to be away from them, caused their death)
- would consider to offer a rendering-of-service to God (suppose that he/she is bringing or carrying an action demonstrating the performance of service towards/for the only true God) -
- and they will do (perform, make, produce, bring about) these actions
- because they did not personally know the Father (God)
- neither me (God's son);
- but contrary to what they will do, these-things I uttered-forth (spoke) and continue to utter-forth to you
- for the purpose and result that at whatever time their hour would come (the limited period when they would be performing these actions against you)
- you would remember (call to your minds and have in memory, be mindful of)
- the things that emphatically I said to you (in Greek there is a definite word for “I” plus the verb meaning “I said” giving emphasis – I myself said to you);
- and I did not say these-things to you from the beginning (out from the time of the very start, since the immediate commencement, the origin of my teaching you my students)
- because during that past time I was in company and association with you,
- but at the present time I am going (actively leading myself under, in the sense of going without any argument, under cover, as animals go because they are under a yoke without going from side to side or intentionally stopping to do something else - I go)
- towards the One (God my Father) Who sent me
- and nobody from among you asks me (none of you is requesting me for information; this usage of words implies familiarity between anyone asking and Jesus - not one of you is inquiring for me to explain),
- 'Where are you going (into what location or place are you leading yourself)?' -
- but on the contrary, because I uttered-forth (spoke) and continue to utter-forth these-things to you
- the sorrow filled and continues to fill your heart (the word "heart" is in the singular form referring to his students as one group or body of people having one heart - grief has made the center/core of your being full, the seat of your whole personal selves and living has been filled with grief).
At this time while walking, none of the learning-disciples were asking Jesus details about where he was going, as Peter had previously done in John 13:36 while at the meal together - but instead at this time they were filled with sorrow.
