First and Second Timothy and Titus

Introduction to Second Timothy

This letter (epistle) of Second Timothy is the second of two letters written by Paul, the apostle, to Timothy. He wrote this second letter around late 67 or early 68 A.D. during Paul’s second imprisonment in Rome shortly before his death. This letter may be the last letter that Paul wrote.

Timothy had already received the gift of holy spirit from God by means of the Lord Jesus Christ because he had already been taught and he believed God's Word. Timothy’s mother was a Christian of the Judean/Israeli background and his father was of the Gentile (other nations) background. Paul first met Timothy as recorded in Acts 16:1-3 and traveled with Paul many times. He is also mentioned in some of Paul’s other letters.

In this letter Paul continues to give Timothy instructions regarding what Timothy had received from God and the Lord Jesus Christ, and regarding his walk/behavior during the everyday living of his life.

By this time, many holy-people had departed from the truth of God’s Word. Paul does not write about specific functions that holy-people may have received within the one spiritual body of Christ, as he did in his first letter.
