Hebrews 4:1-16

Hebrews 4:1-10:

4:1Therefore let us be caused-to-fear lest-perhaps, (during the time of the) promise being left-down to go into His rest, someone from you may consider to have lacked2;
.2for also we are having been good-messaged2 fully-as those-people-also, but the word of hearing did not profit those-people (who were) not being mixed-together2 with the belief to the (people) having heard; .3for we go into rest, the (people) having believed;
according as He said2, “…as I swore in My wrath, ‘If they will go into My rest’” and-so (after) the works from (the) throwing-down of (the) world having been caused-to come-to-pass, .4for it said2 somewhere concerning the seventh thus, “And God rested in the day, the seventh (day) from all His works” .5and in this again, “If they will go into My rest’”, .6therefore since there is left-away some-people to go into it, and the (people) formerly having been good-messaged did not go-into (the rest) because-of unbelief, .7again He marked-out-definitely some day “Today” in David saying after so-much time according as it was said-beforehand2, “Today if-ever you may hear His sound you may not harden your hearts,” .8for if Joshua rested them He used not ever utter-forth concerning another after these days. .9Consequently a sabbath-rest is left-away for the people of God, .10for the (one) having gone into His rest also he rested from his works wholly-as God from (His) own (works).

Following-on logically (from what is written in chapter 3), let us be caused to fear… This is a polite command or a very strong suggestion advising the writer himself and all of us holy-people reading or hearing this writing to have fright, be afraid at the consequences of the performance of any wrong behavior, and therefore manifesting the awe and respect that is rightfully due and ought to be shown towards God. This usage of “let us” is again written in verses 11, 14, and 16 below.

Therefore, let us be caused to fear…

In truth we presently are in the state that we also have already been good-messaged (we have been told the gospel, we have been evangelized to) and this fact has not changed – even just as those people (the unbelieving people who were not allowed to enter into the promised land of Israel with Joshua and Caleb; refer to Hebrews 3:7-19 and Numbers chapter 14).

The good-message was first recorded in Genesis 3:15 regarding the Christ giving the availability for mankind to go into God’s rest. God’s rest followed His 6 days of creation and then resting on the 7th day – however mankind rejected it by refusing to believe what God said and so were evicted from there (Genesis 3:15-24). In this writing, Paul is reminding the people that God is making it available for us to enter into God’s rest. It has not happened yet but it will definitely happen at a future time as promised by God. We are heirs of salvation and we will receive our inheritance (refer to Acts 20:32; Romans 8:16 and 17; II Corinthians 5:17; Ephesians 1:14 and 18-23; Colossians 3:24; Hebrews 1:2, 4 and 14, 6:12-20, 9:11 and 15).

We holy-people have been good-messaged fully-as also those unbelieving people, but emphatically the difference between the two groups of people is that the word of hearing (the spoken-account of the thing-heard, the word that was spoken to be heard, God’s spoken and heard report)…

In truth, we presently go/come into rest, emphatically and specifically the people having believed. We holy-people are the people who have already believed what God has given us to believe concerning Himself and His son the Lord Jesus Christ, and we are in the process of going into God’s rest. We do not lack anything so as to stop us from going into that rest.

All of this is according as God said and continues said (God has not withdrawn His statement – it is still applicable today), “…as I swore in My wrath, ‘If they will go into My rest’” (refer to Psalm 95:11 and Hebrews 3:11-15)…

In truth, the word of hearing said and continues said somewhere about the seventh day (specifically Genesis 2:2 and 3, which the readers of this letter should be very-much aware of) in this manner…

…and in this (on this topic of God’s rest) again,

The sequence:

Following-on logically, since there is left-away some-people to go into God’s rest (the people who are away from His rest now but when the time comes God will bring them into it)…

…again God definitely marked out some day “Today” (God separated a certain length of time which He called “Today” as the boundary, the limited-area, the horizon) – where? – in David (within the sphere of action of David, the king and prophet in his psalm) saying after such an amount of chronological time according as it was said-beforehand (previously definitely communicated with words, it has been foretold before the completion has occurred) and this truth has not changed…

…for if Joshua rested them He used not ever utter-forth concerning another after these days. In truth, if Joshua caused them to cease from pertinent work at that time then God would not ever have continually spoken about another rest after the days that they entered into that land.

“Joshua” is the same Greek name that is also translated as “Jesus” - but in this context it is clearly referring to the Jesus/Joshua who led the descendants of Israel into the promised land at that time. However, the completeness of this truth is referring to the still-future event of entering into the new Jerusalem and Paradise of God, as recorded in Revelation chapters 21 and 22.

In correspondence to what has just been explained, a sabbath-rest is left-away for the people of God. A “sabbath-rest” is a keeping of what is to be carried-out on the sabbath, which means a day of rest, of lying down from works on the seventh day and keeping that day holy worshipping God. Consequently a sabbath-rest is left away (reserved for future use) for/to the people who belong to God.

In truth, the one who has already gone/come into God’s rest also emphatically he rested from his works wholly-as God rested from His own works. Jesus is the one who has already gone into God’s rest. This does not mean that Jesus is now doing nothing, not working, or bored to tears! This means that Jesus has entered into God’s rest because he has done what God asked him to do. Jesus has successfully completed his assigned task of accomplishing all that was required to make redemption and salvation available to/for mankind.

Now Jesus is continuing to do what God asks him to do during the present time (refer to Hebrews 3:2 and 6) and he does this from the position of being at God’s right-hand side on God’s throne (see Acts 2:33, 5:31, 7:55; Romans 8:34; I Corinthians 15:23-28, Ephesians 1:20; Colossians 1:13, 3:1; Hebrews 1:3 and 8, 8:1, 10:12, 12:2; I Peter 3:22). When we holy-people will receive our spiritual bodies at the moment that Christ Jesus comes to gather us all together with him, then we also will enter into God’s rest.

Verses 11-16:

.11Therefore let us be earnestly-diligent to go into that rest in order that someone may not fall in the same pointing-out of unbelief, .12for the word of God (is) living, and in-working, and more-cutting over every two-edged sword, and reaching-through continuously-until (the) distribution of soul and of spirit, both of joints and of marrows, and apt-to-judge (the) thinkings-within and mind-purposes-within of (the) heart, .13and there is not a creation not-manifest before Him but all-things (are) naked and having been exposed-at-the-neck2 to the eyes of Him with Whom (is) the word to us;
.14therefore having a great chief-priest having gone-through2 the heavens, Jesus the son of God, let us strongly-hold the agreement, .15for we have not a chief-priest not being able to suffer-together with our weaknesses but having been tempted2 according to all-things according to likeness without sin, .16therefore let us go with boldness towards the throne of the grace in order that we may receive mercy and find grace for well-timed help.

Following-on logically, let us be earnestly diligent (have speedy application, performance, assiduity, let us endeavor with earnestness) to go/come into that rest (not any other rest, ‘that’ rest is God’s rest) – we will definitely go into God’s rest, but we are to be earnestly diligent while we are in the process of going there – why?…

…for the word of God is living (the word “living” is a verb in participle form and is placed first in this phrase in Greek to emphasize this truth – LIVING is the word of God, what God speaks is alive, the spoken account of God’s inner thoughts are presently and actively living, being alive, in continuous action),

…and there is not a creation not-manifest before Him (there is not a created-thing that is not evident in God’s sight or presence) – but all-things…

…to the eyes of Him (to God’s eyes) with Whom is the word to us (the word to/for us holy-people is with God). God spoke and continues to speak His word to/for us. After He spoke His word it did not desert Him so that He does not have it anymore. The spoken account of God’s inner-thoughts has a purposed reference towards God Himself and it accomplishes what God intends, as a sword/knife being used by the one who is holding it.

Therefore…

…let us strongly-hold the agreement (take strong hold of the agreement, be strong with forceful strength saying the same thing, speaking the same words, our speech in agreement with him, our assent; see Romans 10:8-10 and Hebrews 3:1)…

…therefore let us go with boldness towards (come in company and association with freedom of speech, frankness and openness of speaking, towards)…

“…therefore let us go with boldness towards the throne of the grace in order that we may receive mercy and find grace for well-timed help.”
